The USGS
This is the USGS easy-access (data about data or metadata) site on the National Geospatial Data Clearinghouse (NGDC) as part of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI). Recommended.
The USGS is also accessible through here.
The USGS work on "Exploratory Analysis of Environmental Interactions in California." This preliminary report (not yet approved by the USGS) provides information on the San Francisco region and includes text, images, and animations.
The USGS blurb about what a GIS is, why they are cool, etc.
Some neat NASA stuff
Imaging radar is being used for 3D flyovers (3D glasses needed!). Also has regular flybys and pictures, shuttle photos, etc.
The National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA).
Comprises a merging of the former Defense Mapping Agency, DMA, and the National Photographic Interpretation Center, NPIC. Reputedly the largest employer of cartographers in the USA.
The CIA
Annual Factbook about all countries here (includes small maps). Their well known CIA maps are available to the public (includes purchase info).
Geomatics Canada
The main Canadian government activity in surveying, mapping and remote sensing.
GC Products and services (also avail. in French)

National Atlas Information Service
NAIS of Canada is the authoritative synthesis of the geography of Canada. A snazzy, well-designed site of maps, name services, quizzes, and of course the famous NAISmap (make a map online).

Map Libraries
Electronic Map Library
By William A. Bowen of the California Geographical Survey. Includes:
Digital Atlas of New York City. Maps of population, ancestry, income/poverty, adult educational attainment, household types and commuters.
Atlas of the United States, Atlas of California, etc.
Library of Congress Geography and Map Division
Over 4.5 million maps, with 60,000 atlases and thousands of other items including journals, books and reference materials. Online material is scanty.
Illustrated Maps
Small is beautiful: this collection of four maps by French artists illustrates the French medieval city of Troyes.
University of Chicago map collection
Hosts 370,000 maps, 10,000 air photos, and 2000 books, with an emphasis on topo maps, urban plans and geologic maps.
Harvard Map Collection
Since its inception almost two centuries ago, has grown to encompass 400,000 maps, 6,000 atlases and 5,000 reference books.

The Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection (PCL)
At UT-Austin holds over 230,000 maps. They also have a cartography glossary page. Excellent!
The University of California, Berkeley Earth Sciences and Map Library.
Their map collection contains over 310,00 maps. Their online maps include example topographic maps, nautical charts, facsimile maps and aerial photography (all useful teaching resources).
The John R Borchert Map Library
The University of Minnesota. Contains 280,00 maps, 8,600 atlases, 330,000 aerial photographs (none on the web). Their Automated Cartographic Information Center provides a free map service to library patrons.
The Bodleian Library maproom
The University of Oxford. The seventh largest collection of maps in the world: over 1 million maps and 20,000 atlases.
The rare map collection of the Hargrett Library
The University of Georgia. The over 800 rare maps in the library span 500 years, from the sixteenth through the early twentieth century and include examples of the work of Mercator, Munster, and Blaeu. All are available digitally, with 20% available at this web site. For example, here is Mercator's Orbis terrae compendiosa descriptio (1587, 244kb).
The Ryhiner-Project
The University Library of Berne, Switz. An online map catalog (over 16,000 old maps, plans etc). Also see the homepage of the journal Cartographica Helvetica, and the homepage of Swiss map librarians.
New York Public Library Map Division
Established in 1898, holds some 405,000 maps, 18,000 atlases and books.
UWO Association of Canadian Map Libraries and Archives (ACMLA)
