Part II: Key players and places

Review

In June 1991 Slovenia and Croatia declared their independence from the Yugoslavian Federation. Eight months later, the Muslim-led government of Bosnia-Hercegovina declared independence. Under the direction of neighboring Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic, Yugoslav troops invaded Bosnia in an effort to connect Serb ethnically dominated areas in the region.

Since April 1992, Bosnian Muslims, Croats and Serbs have been fighting for control of Bosnia. Ethnic cleansing, shelling of civilians, widespread poverty and refugees have become commonplace as Serbians made territorial gains between 1991 and 1995*.

Question 1: In your own words, describe what has happened to the extent and location of Serbian control in Bosnia?

In the next part of the Fieldtrip, you will visit three cities and several key players in Bosnia.

Question 2: As you travel to these cities, write a paragraph about each city describing:

  1. its location
  2. its importance or role in the war
  3. its pre-war ethnic composition.
Also, sketch an outline map of Bosnia and place each city in its proper location.

Question 3: Gather information about the following individuals. Record this information in chart format using the names as row headings. Column headings should read: title or position; ethnicity; and role in the war.
