Shapefiles were provided by the East China Normal
University. Shapefile accuracy as a whole is not known but
appears to correspond with land contours visible in a
Landsat image of the area. One exception is the island
district of
Chongming, which shows a significant discrepancy between
the shapefile boundary and the imagery. Discrepancies were
also noted between the area figure provided in the dataset
and the area computed in ArcView. For completeness, both
given and calculated area were included in the attribute
table. It should be noted that there were several sliver
polygons and errors in digitizing that caused errors in
attribute data (such as area=0, population, and derived
fields). In addition, there were numerous polygons with
missing attribute data - whether there was no data
available or error in input, etc. could not be determined.
These types of errors caused us to question the value of
the entire database.

Completeness_Report:
Large proportion of the attributes were not relevant to the
project and were discarded. Those kept were 1990 and 1997
population, sub-district name and ID and area. Again we
noticed numerous instances of apparent errors in the
attribute data (area=0, population of 200 for 10
consecutive sub-districts, etc.). For this reason only the
most crucial data was kept.

Horizontal Positional Accuracy is tested by visual
comparison of polygon layer onscreen against Landsat image
and verifying the location of the data on screen relative
to other data layers in the geographic area (ie: roads and
hydro layer provided by ECNU).

Process_Description:
Data was first translated from the original Chinese by Yu
Ying, a graduate student in geography at GSU and Shanghai
native. Data was then sorted and prioritized, checked for
accuracy and internal consistency to the best available
level. Data was then formatted for use in ArcView using
.dbf file format. Variables were named for clarity and
derived variables were computed using ArcView map
calculator. Formatted attribute table was then joined to
shapefile of district boundaries using Sub-District ID Code
as the common field.
