Abstract:
Shapefile of the 20 Districts of Shanghai Province, China,
with demographic data from 1990-1997.
Purpose:
To provide a baseline for further study of urbanization in
Shanghai, and add to existing data prepared by the department.
Supplemental_Information:
The shape files were provided to us from East China Normal
University. Attribute data sources are the 1996 Statistical
Abstract of China, electronic database from ECNU, and
electronic database from the University of Michigan.

Shapefiles were provided by the East China Normal
University. Shapefile accuracy is not know but appers to
correspond with land contours visible in a Landsat image of
the area. One exception is the island district of
Chongming, which shows a significant discrepancy between
the shapefile boundary and the imagery. Discrepancies were
also noted between the area figure provided in the dataset
and the area computed in ArcView. For completeness, both
given and calculated area were included in the attribute
table. Attributes were joined to the shapefile after entry
in Excel. Attributes were taken from various sources
assumed to be accurate.

Attrbiutes were selected based on the following criteria:
Relavance to the project at hand; availablilty of data for
majority of Districts (variables containing data for only a
small percentage of districts were left out); perceived
accuracy (when available, data from ECNU was preferred as
it was believed to be the most accurate); internal consistency.

Horizontal Positional Accuracy is tested by visual
comparison of polygon layer onscreen against Landsat image
and verifying the location of the data on screen relative
to other data layers in the geographic area (ie: roads and
hydro layer provided by ECNU).

Process_Description:
Data was first translated from the original Chinese by Yu
Ying, a graduate student in geography at GSU and Shanghai
native. Data was then sorted and prioritized, checked for
accuracy and internal consistency to the best available
level. Data from paper sources was typed into Excel; data
from electronic datbase was culled from larger dataset of
irrelevant and cryptic data. Data was then formatted for
use in ArcView using .dbf file format. Variables were named
for clarity and derived variables were computed using
ArcView map calculator. Formatted attribute table was then
joined to shapefile of district boundaries using District
ID Code as the common field.
