Land-use areas depicted on the map source include Commercial/Industrial, Governmental/Institutional, Utility, and Park. Purpose: To provide a baseline for further study of land-use change in Shanghai, particularly the location of industrial/commercial facilities. Supplemental_Information: The source map was produced by the National Imagery and Mapping Agency and the Central Intelligence Agency. The de-classified map was obtained from the U.S. Library of Congress. Very little data on the map's origins, projection etc. appears on the map itself. DATA_QUALITY_INFORMATION

Attribute_Accuracy: Attribute_Accuracy_Report: The polgon theme digitized from the source map onscreen in ArcView has been compared to the original source map and found to be accurate and satisfactory. Attribute information was taken from the printed map and map legend and added to the attribute table at the time of digitizing. Further QC work may be done on printed copies of the data at some later date. Logical_Consistency_Report: Completeness_Report: The source map legend contained four different land-use classifications. All polygons falling into one of these four type classes was digitized, with attributes added based on color (Land_use type) and map text (Facillity Name). No polygons falling into one of the four classes was omitted from the polygon theme created. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Horizontal Positional Accuracy is tested by visual comparison of polygon layer onscreen against source map and verifying the location of the data on screen relative to other data layers in the geographic area. Process_Step: Process_Description: Source paper map was scanned into CADImage_SCAN software using a large format Ideal brand scanner model FSS 12300dsp. The image was scanned in at a resolution of 300 dpi and grayscale color scheme, and saved as a non-georeferenced TIF file. The TIF was then converted to an .IMG file for georeferencing in Erdas Imagine software. Map image was georeferenced using a Landsat scene of Shanghai from 3/26/00. Band 9, a pan-chromatic band with 15-meter cell resolution, was selected for referencing. 10 Ground Control Points were collected between the map and the Landsat - easily identifiable and relatively permanent features such as road/canal iand road/road ntersections were chosen for GCPs. A third order transformation was computed and an RMS error of 4.57, within the range of acceptable error for the dataset. Visual inspection of the fit proved satisfactory over the entire extent of the image. Georeferencing information was then written to the image file by Calibration, creating a georeferenced raster image of the scanned source map. The georeferenced map image was then brought into ArcView for onscreen capture of the selected polygon features. Digitizing was done at a large scale (1:3,000 - 1: 10,000) in order to maximize shape and area accuracy of the captured features. The resulting shapefile contains 432 polygons with ID, Land-Use Type and Facility Name attributes added from the source data. The shapefile in UTM coordinate system was also reprojected in ArcView to geographic projection (decimal degrees) for project purposes.
